Easy ways to use play and meaningful family activities for more natural and authentic family photos in Tampa, Florida.

If the thought of getting your young children dressed, out the door and happily smiling for family photos feels a little overwhelming, you are definitely not alone.
One of the questions I hear most often from parents is: What if my kids don’t cooperate?
Here’s the good news… they don’t need to!
The most meaningful family photographs rarely happen when everyone is standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera. They happen when your toddler reaches for your hand, your preschooler bursts into a belly laugh or your baby snuggles into that familiar spot on your shoulder.
That is why I love incorporating play and simple, meaningful activities into family photo sessions. Giving children something fun and familiar to do takes the pressure off everyone. Instead of asking your kids to perform for the camera, we give them space to connect with you—and I’ll photograph the sweet, funny and wonderfully real moments that unfold.
Whether we meet at your home, explore a favorite neighborhood park or head to the beach, here are a few easy ways to create a relaxed session that feels like your family.
You do not need to plan an elaborate activity or bring a trunk full of props. Start by thinking about the little things your family naturally enjoys together.
Maybe your children love piling onto your bed for morning snuggles. Maybe you spend Saturday afternoons riding bikes, looking for lizards in the backyard or enjoying your favorite Tampa park. Perhaps your toddler asks you to read the same book every night, or your whole family loves making pancakes together.
These everyday rituals may feel ordinary now, but they are often the details you will miss most as your children grow.
A meaningful photo-session activity could be as simple as:
The best activity is one that feels comfortable for your family and allows you to interact with one another!
Young children usually have a hard time with repeated instructions like “stand still,” “look here” and “smile.” Honestly, that is a lot to ask—especially near bedtime!
Play gives children a job that actually feels fun. Instead of focusing on the camera, they can focus on finding the biggest shell, making their sibling laugh or running into your arms.
During an outdoor family session, I might encourage you to:
These prompts create movement and connection without making the session feel overly posed. We will still make time for a few classic photographs of everyone together, but we will not spend the entire session trying to achieve one “perfect” smile.

The easiest sessions meet children where they are.
For babies, meaningful activities might include cuddling in the nursery, rocking in a favorite chair, tummy time on a quilt, playing with tiny toes on the bed or a bath in the kitchen sink!
Toddlers often love movement. Bubbles, dancing, picking flowers, running to Mom or Dad and searching for interesting leaves or shells can work beautifully.
Preschoolers may enjoy a little more imagination. We can go on a “treasure hunt,” tell silly secrets, play a quick game of tag or let them invent a family dance.
If you have siblings, games that encourage them to work together—or be silly together—can help their personalities and relationship shine. Think blanket forts, jumping on the bed with permission, a wagon ride or seeing who can make the funniest face.
Nothing needs to go exactly as planned. If your child loses interest in one idea, we simply move on to another.
Your location can naturally inspire what your family does during the session.
An in-home session is perfect for documenting the routines and spaces that hold your real memories. We might begin with snuggles on the couch, move into a child’s bedroom for books and play, and finish with bubbles or a snack in the backyard. Home can be especially helpful for babies, toddlers and children who take a little time to warm up because everything already feels familiar.
At a local Tampa park, your family can walk, explore, race, collect leaves or enjoy a simple picnic. The open space gives energetic children room to move while still creating plenty of opportunities for close, connected photographs.
At the beach, children can dig in the sand, splash at the water’s edge, look for shells and cuddle in a towel as the sun begins to set. Rather than asking little ones to ignore the beach and pose, we let them experience it.
When choosing a location, think beyond what looks pretty. Consider where your children will feel comfortable and what your family will genuinely enjoy doing together.

If you decide to bring an item into your session, choose something your family truly uses or loves.
A well-loved book, Grandma’s handmade quilt, your child’s favorite wooden toy or the little wagon you pull around the neighborhood will feel more personal than a prop chosen only because it matches your outfits.
You also do not need to hide every favorite stuffed animal. If your toddler needs their beloved bunny to feel safe, we can include it in a few photographs. One day, seeing that little toy tucked under their arm may bring back an entire season of childhood.
Activities are helpful, but they are never a script.
Your child may decide that collecting sticks is far more exciting than the game we planned. Someone may need a snack break. Your toddler may want to be held for most of the session, or your children may dissolve into laughter over something none of the adults understand.
Those are not interruptions to your session. They are your session.
The goal is not to manufacture a perfect version of your family. It is to create space for your real connection to show up. I will gently guide you when needed, follow your children’s lead and watch for the small in-between moments—the hand hold, windswept hair, sleepy snuggles, sandy toes and gap-toothed smiles.

Your children are allowed to need breaks. They are allowed to move, explore, feel unsure at first and warm up in their own time. You are allowed to relax, hold them close and enjoy being together.
By including play and activities that mean something to your family, your photo session becomes more than a time to make everyone look at the camera. It becomes a small piece of your real life—full of movement, affection, laughter and the beautifully imperfect moments that make your family yours!
And those are the photographs that will feel like home.
