Your gallery day is here — cue the happy tears!!! 🥰 After all the anticipation, your beautiful photos have officially landed in your inbox. Whether it’s your precious newborn, family laughter, or that maternity glow, these are memories you’ll want to keep safe forever.

As your photographer, I always encourage clients to back up their images as soon as possible once they receive their final gallery. Technology is amazing — until it isn’t! Hard drives fail, phones get lost, and links can eventually expire. Here’s how to make sure your new photos are protected for years to come.

1. Download Your Full Gallery Right Away

Once you receive your e-mail with your gallery link, download the full-resolution gallery immediately to your computer.

  • Use the “Download All” option so you have every image in one folder.
  • Make sure you’re saving the high-resolution version — these are perfect for printing and preserving the best quality.

💡 Tip: Create a folder with the session name and date (for example, “Smith Family – February 2026”) so it’s easy to find later.

2. Save a Copy on an External Hard Drive

External hard drives are one of the most reliable, affordable backup options.

  • Plug it into your computer and copy your downloaded gallery folder over.
  • These drives can hold thousands of photos and are great for long-term storage.

💡 Bonus Tip: Keep your external drive in a safe, dry place — not plugged in all the time — to avoid accidental overwrites or power surge issues.

Here’s a link to my favorite SSD external hard drive that I personally use for all of my photos. It’s small, fast and reliable!

3. Use a Cloud Backup Service

For extra security, back up your photos in the cloud. This ensures your images are safe even if your computer or hard drive is ever lost or damaged.
Popular options include:

  • Google Drive
  • Dropbox
  • iCloud Drive (especially easy for Apple users)
  • Amazon Photos (free for Amazon Prime members!)

💡 Pro Tip: Create a folder for each photography session — this keeps everything organized and easy to find later.

4. Save a Copy on Your Phone (Optional)

You can also download your favorite images to your phone for easy access and sharing. Just keep in mind that phones can run out of space, so it’s best to think of this as a convenience copy, not your main backup.

If you’re an Apple user, my favorite way to easily share images from the computer to my phone is to air drop them!

5. Print Your Favorites!

A digital backup is wonderful, but there’s nothing like seeing your photos printed and displayed in your home. I always recommend ordering prints and albums directly through your gallery for the best color and quality (and convenience!) — even small prints from your favorite moments serve as a lasting, tangible backup.

6. Keep Multiple Copies

The best backup system follows this general rule of thumb:

  • 3 copies of your photos
  • 2 different types of storage (like a hard drive + the cloud)
  • 1 copy stored off-site (like your cloud account)

That way, even if one method fails, your photos are still safe somewhere else.

Backing up your gallery only takes a few minutes, but it gives you peace of mind for a lifetime. These photos are your story — your family’s legacy — and I want you to be able to enjoy them for generations to come.

If you ever need help downloading or saving your images, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m always happy to help ensure your memories stay safe and sound 💛
